What do we think about when we read the word ‘career’?
Exploring this question can reveal how we feel about the trajectory of our career and how deeply it influences our sense of identity. ‘Career’ originates from the Middle French ‘carriere’, meaning ‘road’ or ‘racecourse’ and the Latin ‘carrus’, meaning ‘chariot’. The history of the word itself illuminates how we might conceptualise careers: a course we follow in ourlives, which requires focus and looking ahead with a sense of progression.
