Renting or Contracting: What is the Right Choice for You?

At Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence, we offer a variety of measurement services including equipment rentals, contract programming and contract inspection. Deciding when it is appropriate to rent a piece of equipment or choosing to contract your work to a company can be a challenge. In this post, we will help you identify which is appropriate for each situation.

Experience
Experience plays a major role in whether you should rent or contract your workload. In the case where your company has little to no expertise in programming and using metrology equipment, contract services are typically the best option for completing a project on time. With contract services, metrology experts take full control of the inspection/measurement task, and you can be confident that the task will be done correctly the first time. For companies that have skilled personnel available and experience in programming and using metrology equipment, a rental is the best option. When renting metrology equipment, experience of the hardware and software is a requirement.

Try Before You Buy
Are you looking to acquire inspection equipment, but aren’t quite ready to make the purchase? By renting, you can test the equipment to make sure it meets your company’s needs, and also receive equipment training. Hexagon can offer customized training, so a true evaluation can be performed. This will allow you to have a trial run of the equipment prior to your purchase and enable you to prove that the solution addresses your needs. Hexagon also offers incentives to renters looking to purchase the equipment after the rental period.

Capacity
In a case where your company already has inspection equipment, but the machines and/or operators are at full capacity, utilizing rental equipment or contracting are both smart options. The option you should choose will depend on how long you need the equipment to complete the new or outstanding tasks.

Long-Term Projects
For long-term projects, a combination of both rental and contract solutions is possible. To commence the project, contract services could be provided where an applications expert helps create programs or processes and provides on the job training. Once an operator has been successfully trained, the equipment can remain in place for the remainder of the rental period.

Cost
Being smart with your resources is top of mind for many organizations. If cost is a concern, and you have a long-term project coming your way, with expertise available already in house, renting equipment would be an economical way to proceed. Rentals are charged at a fixed weekly or monthly rate, whereas contract services are based on hours and could be subject to overtime rates.

Whether you decide that contracting work or renting is the right choice for you, our application experts are ready to assist you at Hexagon. Our mission is to give you the confidence you need to perform measurement tasks as quickly and efficiently as possible. With these options in mind, manufacturers can continue to drive productivity and improve their quality processes.
