Bringing greater agility to new product introduction

Electronics are key to delivering an amazing experience in today’s products and services, whether that’s a smartphone, a smart vehicle, a smart home, a smart building or smart city.

At the same time, the electronics industry is also responsible for creating the smart, automated, efficient systems that make it possible to digitize every other industrial sector’s design, manufacturing and supply chains.

Whether delivering efficiency and automation in smart factories and plants as part of industry 4.0 initiatives or driving smart, sustainable, vehicles with ADAS and electric powertrains, or helping deliver smart sustainable operations, the electronics industry is an engine of fundamental change.

As digitization continues to pick up pace across manufacturing, connected electronic systems, edge and cloud computing and agile software development will combine to further accelerate transformation, both within the electronics manufacturing sector and in every other manufacturing fields. The result will be a more flexible and iterative approach to new product introduction, design and production.

Research from McKinsey shows the majority of industries are now heavily digitizing their processes. Those doing it well are benefiting from improvements in their products, manufacturing, processes and supply chains.

As McKinsey states, “Bold, tightly integrated digital strategies will be the biggest differentiator between companies that win and companies that don’t, and the biggest payouts will go to those that initiate digital disruptions. Fast-followers with operational excellence and superior organizational health won’t be far behind.”

We’re already seeing NPI processes, digital design, engineering, production and metrology tools being adapted to modern, agile development methods. More scrum-like, vertically oriented teams within manufacturing are behaving like developers in digitally native tech companies. And they are demanding more flexibility in the way they adopt, use and succeed with digital tools. Am I the only one who thinks this sounds like “Engineering as a Service”?

The digital twin is a key component of our vision, here at Hexagon. This doesn’t just mean designing things in the digital world. It also means digitizing the physical one. The ability to provide manufacturers with the digital manifestation of what happens in the physical world, when and how they need it, is helping the companies we work with improve their agile development processes

We’re confident in our abilities to help our customers. So much so, we’re offering the opportunity to trial the benefits of our design and engineering products. Find out how we can help address the electronics packaging design and the core thermal, structural and reliability challenges faced by our customers.
